Dr Siew Hoong (Joe) Yip is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Neuroendocrinology, Department of Anatomy, University of Otago, New Zealand. He completed his PhD at University of Otago in 2013 and is currently a Principal Investigator of the Royal Society of New Zealand Marsden Fast-start grant. He formally served as secretary of NZSE from 2015-2018 and is currently the Co-chairperson of the Neuroscience Research Group, Department of Anatomy, University of Otago. His research focuses on the neuronal plasticity induced by reproductive hormones, and how this contributes to reproductive function. Using a wide range of anatomical and functional neuroscience tools in transgenic rodent models, he revealed neurochemical, morphological and behavioural characteristics of tuberoinfundibular dopaminergic (TIDA) neurons relevant to maternal adaptation. He is particularly interested in understanding the mechanism underlying the plasticity of TIDA neurons to alter prolactin secretion especially to allow elevated levels critical for lactation.
