Dr Iremonger’s research focuses on understanding the synaptic and dendritic specializations that enable unique activity patterns, plasticity and subsequent processing of information in the hypothalamus. Dr Iremonger did his PhD training at the University of Calgary in the laboratory of Professor Jaideep Bains. His PhD research identified new forms of synaptic plasticity at glutamate synapses in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus. In 2010 he returned to New Zealand to work with Professor Allan Herbison at the University of Otago. His recent research has revealed how the projections of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons function simultaneously as an axon and dendrite. This specialized projection is thought to be essential for the generation of the unique hormone release profiles driven by GnRH neurons in vivo.
